Spiel - Games @ Virginia Tech

A Brief History of Spiel

or How We Learned To Stop Worrying And Play The Games

Once upon a time, VTSFFC had Game Days. These were held one Saturday a month, and people could come and bring their games and play. Gradually, some of the Game Day attendees began to notice that around ninety percent of the people who came to Game Days didn't come to any other VTSFFC events. So one evening back in early '00 one of those people said to another one (who was grousing about how there weren't enough Game Days), "Why don't you start your own games club?"

The suggestion was taken to heart, and the first ever Spiel Organizational Meeting was held soon thereafter in early April. At the meeting, the three students were sworn in as the Three Required Officers, and Joseph Cochran IV was officially listed as Faculty Advisor. We celebrated this historic occasion by playing a game of Settlers.

So. We now had Emily, the President with no members; Adam, the Treasurer with no money, and Jay, the Officer with no duties, along with Joe, the advisor with no advice, Mandy, the member with no time, and Tucker, the webmaster with no net connection. From these humble beginnings we grew into the gaming behemoth you see today.

We acquired stewardship of Games Day from VTSFFC in September of '00, and made our first public appearance at the Student Showcase in that month, attracting an astounding three new members. These days, if you drop by on Wednesday night you're likely to find upwards of fifteen people playing a variety of games. So come on by. We'd love to have you.
